UPDATE: Marriage Protection Amendment
Also known as the "Defense of Hypocrisy Act!"
According to this story on PageOneQ, Senators Larry Craig (R-ID) and David Vitter (R-LA) have so compartmentalized their own tiny brains that they are unable to see that their latest legislative venture is an exercise in cognitive dissonance.
You remember Larry Craig, don't you? The guy who was caught cruising a mens room at the Minneapolis airport? That's right, the guy with the "wide stance."
And if Vitter's name is not exactly a household word, let it be enough to say that he was a client of the late "DC Madam." You've undoubtedly heard of her.
These two are co-sponsors of Senate Joint Resolution 43 which, in between guffaws of laughters and gasps of incredulity, is known as the Marriage Protection Amendment.
(The PageOneQ story on this is a little fuzzy on some of the details, most notably the assertion that "(i)f ratified, the bill would amend the United States Constitution to state that marriage 'shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman'." In fact, Congress has no power to amend the US Constitution. If both houses of Congress determine by a two-thirds majority that an amendment is necessary, then the proposed amendment is sent to the states. If two thirds of the states ratify the amendment, then it becomes law.)
